Chair Introductions

President - Jackson Kim
Greetings, delegates!
Hi, my name is Jackson Kim, a sophomore from SMIC. It is my great honor to serve you as the president chair for the General Assembly at SMICMUN IX. This SMICMUN will mark my 9th conference over the last five years.
I will be focusing on the issue of "Addressing Drought-Induced Famine in the Horn of Africa" for this conference. Famines like the one in the Horn of Africa are a direct obstacle in achieving one of the SDGs, Zero Hunger, and should be urgently resolved focusing not only the people suffering from the famine but the drought itself.
Remember that MUN is a space to debate, to collaborate, and to learn. I hope delegates will come prepared to openly listen, critically think, and confidently speak. Every idea has the power to make an impact.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. Looking forward to a fruitful debate! See you in November!

Deputy President - Chloe Ma
Greetings, delegates! My name is Chloe, a senior at Shanghai American School Puxi, and I am honored to be able to serve as your Deputy President for General Assembly at SMICMUN IX. This year's SMICMUN will mark my 10th MUN conference and my first time chairing.
I will be focusing on the topic of "Regulating the Fracking Practices of Major Oil Companies," a pressing environmental and public health issue. As global energy demands increase, the widespread fracking operations by major oil companies have raised significant concerns. The practice involves injecting large amounts of water, chemicals, and sand deep into the earth to extract natural gas and oil, which can cause groundwater contamination, air pollution, and seismic activity. Strengthening international regulations on these practices is vital to reduce environmental degradation, safeguarding public health, and promote sustainable energy development. I look forward to hearing insightful perspectives and comprehensive solutions that highlight the complexities of these issues, along with fruitful debates.
See you all in November!

Deputy President - ChuChu Wen
Hi Delegates!
My name is ChuChu Wen, currently a freshman in Shanghai American School Puxi Campus, and it is my upmost honor to be serving as your deputy president of GA in this iteration of SMICMUN. This will mark as my 9th MUN conference, and my first conference serving as a chair.
In this conference, I will be focusing on the topic "Ensuring equitable access to education for refugees and displaced persons". The global displacement crisis, driven by conflict, persecution, and environmental factors, represents one of the most significant challenges to international development and human dignity in the 21st century. Central to this challenge is the systemic disruption of education for millions of refugees and displaced persons.
I look forward to reading your proposed resolutions and watching your fruitful debates. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to any of the chairs. See you in November!
Committee Topics
Regulating the Fracking Practices of Major Oil Companies
Strengthening international regulations on fracking is essential to mitigate environmental degradation and safeguard public health. Fracking operations often lead to water contamination, seismic activity, and greenhouse gas emissions, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Establishing transparent reporting standards, enforcing environmental impact assessments, and investing in cleaner energy alternatives can reduce the negative consequences of hydraulic fracturing. Global cooperation and accountability are necessity to balancing energy needs.

Addressing Drought-Induced Famine in the Horn of Africa
Tackling drought-induced famine in the Horn of Africa requires a comprehensive strategy that addresses both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term resilience. Prolonged droughts, worsened by climate change, have devastated agriculture, water supplies, and food security in the region. International support should focus on delivering emergency aid, improving water infrastructure, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Collaborative efforts must also address political instability and enhance early warning systems to prevent future crises and protect at-risk populations.

Ensuring Equitable Access to Education for Refugees and Displaced Persons
Ensuring access to quality education for refugees and displaced persons is critical for safeguarding human rights and fostering long-term development. Displacement often disrupts learning, especially for children, due to legal barriers, under-resourced facilities, and trauma. Strategies should include integrating refugee students into national education systems, expanding funding for inclusive education programs, and training educators in culturally responsive teaching. Providing safe, stable learning environments empowers displaced communities and supports their successful integration into society.
