President - Anthony Yang

Hello delegates!

My name is Anthony Yang, and I am a current junior attending SMIC. It is my honor to serve as President for the Security Council at SMICMUN this year. I have been involved in MUN since ninth grade and this will be my second time chairing. I believe that MUN is one of the best activities I have ever attended, and I gained so much throughout my experience, for example, confidence, happiness, and critical thinking skills. Delegates, I believe that all of you will have a wonderful experience at SMICMUN IX!

In this conference, I will be responsible for the topic "Addressing Political Instability and Collapse in Haiti." This issue is characterized by governance challenges and human rights violations, especially following multiple conflicts involving gangs and political parties. It is urgent to address the ongoing conflict, and I am delighted to see the well-crafted resolutions from all delegates.

Good luck, delegates, and I am excited to meet all of you at the upcoming conference!

Deputy President - Giovanni Giaccardo

Hello Esteemed Directors and honourable delegates.

My name is Giovanni Giaccardo, and I am honoured to be your deputy president of the security council for SMICMUN IX. I am looking forward to the constructive and fruitful debates that delegates in the security council will be providing regarding the political instability and collapse in Haiti and policies mad to mitigate the threat of North Korea's missile arsenal and military cooperation. I hope that throughout the conference and the debates that will occur delegates are able to make friends, produce new policies and provide meaningful engagement with the issues presented.

I look forward to seeing you all in the conference soon.

Committee Topics

Mitigating the Threat of North Korea's Advanced Missile Arsenal and Military Cooperation

North Korea has quickly spread missile and nuclear arms in the past few years, having experimented with all manner of weapons from short-range tactical missiles to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Such advancements heighten tensions across East Asia and are becoming ever more dangerous to the world's security. At the same time, reports of North Korea increasing military ties with other countries—through arms sales, exchange of cutting-edge technology, or collaborative activities—raises concerns about the spread of cutting-edge weapons. Collectively, these trends threaten global norms and require an organized global action.

Addressing Political Instability and Collapse in Haiti

Haiti is suffering from one of the worst political and security crises of its recent history. Due to decades of unstable governance, corruption, and economic hardship, the deterioration of state institutions has led to large parts of the country being held by well-armed gangs. The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, repeated election delays, and the lack of a functional government have created additional political distrust and instability. Dispersion of violence, displacement, and humanitarian crisis persist to escalate, with local and international actors calling for swift action to reestablish stability, encourage democratic rule, and ease the plight of the Haitian people.
