UN Commission on the Status of Women

Intermediate Committee

Chair Introductions

President - Kiaan Singh

Greetings, Delegates!

Femicide is often discussed through statistics. Behind those statistics, however, is a much harder question: to what extent are governments able to combat violence that is persistent, underreported, and shaped by various social and institutional contexts?

My name is Kiaan Singh, a junior at Shanghai Community International School (Hongqiao), and I am excited to be serving as the President Chair of UNCSW at this milestone iteration of SMICMUN. This will be my 14th conference and my 4th time serving as chair.

My topic of specialization is "Addressing Rising Rates of Femicide in Sub-Saharan Africa." I hope our discussions move beyond simply resolving to act. The challenge will be deciding how prevention can be strengthened, how existing protections can be enforced, how accountability can be improved, and how international action can remain responsive to unique national circumstances.

More than anything, I hope UNCSW becomes a committee where delegates come knowledgeable and prepared to defend their countries' positions but are equally prepared to negotiate productively with those who approach the issue differently and find compromises that suit states facing varying circumstances. The strongest resolutions rarely begin with agreement; rather, as steel sharpens steel, competing ideas should test, refine, and ultimately strengthen one another.

If you have any queries prior to conference day, please feel free to reach me at kiaansingh02@gmail.com.

I look forward to a fruitful debate at SMICMUN X!

Deputy President - Nikki Lu

Greetings delegates,

In a 2026 PBS interview, women's rights activist Malala Yousafzai described receiving intense social-media crackdown after a photograph of her wearing jeans went viral: "Somebody took a photo and uploaded it. And that photo went viral." Much of this online hate was centered on controlling how a young woman should dress and behave. Delegates, this is the reality of what hundreds of thousands of women, men, and non-binary individuals are exposed to: dehumanizing, derogatory, and polarized hate speech propelled and supported by online perpetrators and abusers.

My name is Nikki Lu, and I am a senior at Shanghai SMIC Private School. It is my greatest honor and pleasure to serve as your deputy president for this iteration of SMICMUN X, UNCSW. This would be my 5th conference and my first time chairing.

For this conference, I, along with my co-chair, Oceana, will be focusing on the topic: combating gender-based harassment, abuse, and radicalization in online spaces. I am ecstatic to see the collaboration and new ideas that delegates will come up with to combat this digital violence in the modern age.

I can't wait to hear from you all and have a wonderful two days of debate!

Deputy President - Oceana Zhang

Greetings, esteemed delegates!

I am Oceana Zhang, a junior at Shanghai French School (LFS), and it is my honor to serve as your Deputy President for UNCSW at SMICMUN X. Throughout past conferences, MUN has taught me that diplomacy is not only about drafting resolutions, but also about listening to the people behind the statistics and advocating for change from diverse perspectives.

This year, our committee will tackle Combating Gender-Based Harassment, Abuse, and Radicalization in Online Spaces. Digital platforms have been shaping both activism and violence. Throughout our debate, we will examine how to center survivors, hold platforms accountable, and address how online radicalization preys on gendered vulnerability. I hope we can embrace diverse perspectives and develop concrete, rights-based, and feasible solutions together!
